Overview
Skew is a communication tool that facilitates secure remote working. The value proposition is on the security and protection of a user’s data, and transparency as regards to how it disseminates all data collected from the user.
The problem space I identified was primarily around the issues of data transparency and video call hacks on existing platforms. My research showed that while most users understand that data hacks are occurrences companies cannot really prevent 100%; a majority of users however felt that the current structure of the privacy and terms of service sections on existing apps appeared intentionally misleading and created a cognitive load when trying to understand the information, which usually prompts most users to not read through the contents.
Project goal
The goal of the project was to conduct research on data privacy and data breach in order to understand the direct impact on users at a deeper level, in an effort to develop a digital solution through research insights that could remedy this problem.
Outcome
The solution I created focused on a simple way to give users flexible access to information and control of how their data was being collected, shared and disseminated. My solution was to simplify the information on the service and terms section, and show the user what’s important at a glance, but also offer an option for users to get more details on their data at any point while using the product.
The final product was a mobile and web app prototype designed to offer competitive video conferencing quality to what’s on the market, but taking it a step further by being a digital tool that’s transparent about its data collection and handling practices. Clearly differentiating itself in a time when remote work is on the steady incline and data privacy is a top concern for most users.
